A beach-side safari camp tucked within the dunes of Cape Range National Park, Sal Salis is a remote wilderness getaway best known for its location on Ningaloo Reef.
Just steps away from the water’s edge, you can spend your days exploring some 500 species of colorful fish and 250 different types of coral.
The mighty giants of the ocean – whale sharks, humpbacks and dolphins – linger just beyond the reef, and make your mid-afternoon swim even more memorable.
On land, red kangaroos, wallaroos, and rock wallabies dot the dunes with lively personalities, and the song of a butcher bird can be heard from the comforts of your tent.
By night, let the soft sound of the waves serenade you to sleep, awaking the next morning to a series of activities like snorkeling and whale swims.
Add in contemporary cuisine, luxury tents and a delightfully off-the-grid location and you'll end up with the remarkably unique experience of Sal Salis.
Recognized as the best place in the world to swim with whale sharks, Ningaloo Reef stretches 173 miles along Australia’s west coast – making it Australia’s largest fringing coral reef. A designated marine park, these waters are visited by a large range of whale and dolphin species, including humpback whales, minke whales, orcas, bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins.
Sal Salis is tucked within the neighboring sand dunes of Cape Range National Park and is accessible via air through Exmouth’s Learmonth Airport – serviced by Qantas airlines daily from Perth. Airport transfers can be arranged pre-arrival to take you from there to the hotel, or you can do the drive yourself over the course of an hour.
The wilderness tents at Sal Salis add a romantically rugged touch to your untraditional getaway. Hidden in the dunes overlooking the reef, each has been designed to blend in with the environment and yet each also holds all the comforts of home. Expect solid wooden floors, king-sized beds and 500 thread count sheets. A honeymoon tent is also available to guests for special occasions and is separated from the rest for the utmost seclusion and privacy.
Outside of your tent, the lodge is the place to gather for meals and relaxation. Board games, a small library and a comfortable lounge are at your disposal, and a long table marks the location of shared meals by the resident chef. Using authentically Australian ingredients to create a series of flavorful dishes, dining out in the dunes can be a true highlight of the trip.
Wilderness Tents
Each of Sal Salis’ spacious, airy wilderness tents are hidden in the dunes overlooking the beach. Raised platforms lift the tents to enhance views of the ocean, which can be enjoyed from the comfortable handmade jarrah bed complete with quality cotton linens. An eco-ensuite bathroom utilizes a natureloo, native herb soaps and ecologically sound shampoos to conserve water and have minimal impact on the ecosystem, while mini bars, televisions and telephones are left out of your room to keep you in tune with nature.
Honeymoon Tent
A romantic retreat down the boardwalk from the main lodge, the Honeymoon Tent boasts views of a seemingly private white sand beach and the Ningaloo Reef beyond. Laze about with a loved one on the wide front deck’s double hammock or retreat indoors to enjoy the four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting. Romantic in décor and purposely forgetting Wi-Fi and other technology, you’ll enjoy delicious meals, a full open bar and – of course – each other’s company.
