Resting on the coastal floodplains of Australia’s Top End, Bamurru Plains offers an immersive wild bush camp experience.
With just 10 luxury safari-style bungalows, you’ll have exclusive access to over 115 square miles of exceptional wilderness and prolific wildlife – magpies, wallabies and one of the largest crocodile populations in the world included.
Regarded as an ecologically sensitive luxury camp, a stay here includes outdoor experiences like river cruises, airboat tours, safaris and fishing.
Spend your days watching hundreds of birds take flight from around the infinity-edge pool, take a drive into the woodlands to spot dingoes or lounge in your luxury tent and watch the buffalo walk by.
With only 20 guests at any one time, you’ll have all the comforts you require, yet feel refreshingly removed from the complexities of civilization.
Just west of the breath-taking Kakadu National Park, Bamurru Plains is refreshingly remote and spectacularly secluded. Traveled to most easily from Darwin via a 20-minute flight, your wild bush retreat is surprisingly accessible, and certainly worth going (however slightly) out of the way for.
A microcosm of wildlife, birds and fish, the Mary River Wetlands are one of the rarest land systems in the world. As such, the Top End of the Northern Territory has some of the greatest climatic extremes, meaning you can expect particularly wet or dry weather at varying times of year.
All 10 of Bamurru’s suites are set on stilts overlooking the floodplains. Equipped with ensuite bathrooms, ultra-comfortable beds and décor reflecting the earlier Indigenous, hunting and pastoral history, you can expect corrugated iron and lantern lighting, explorer’s maps, buffalo horns, fish traps and old photos. Mesh screens also make up three of your walls, drawing the outside in so you can hear, see and almost touch the wilderness and wildlife around you.
The main lodge is described as an oasis of tropical calm within a noisy wildlife spectacle, featuring comfortable wicker sofas, a well-stocked library and an infinity pool. Meals are served in the main pavilion, and often highlight local ingredients like bush spices and plants. Whether you find yourself out on an excursion, cozied up in the accommodation or sprawled out by the pool, the focus here is always on the wilderness and wildlife that surrounds you.
Safari Bungalows
Nine out of 10 suites at Bamurru Plains are Safari Bungalows, each spacious in design and architecturally unique. Set on stilts overlooking the floodplains and utilizing mesh to make up three walls, you can wake to the orange light of dawn and watch the activity of the wild, all before you’ve even left your bed. Organic cotton linen and a pillow menu offer the utmost comfort, while a spacious ensuite bathroom boasts a high-pressure shower. You won’t find a television, cd player, mini bar or phone reception at Bamurru Plains, as the experience is about truly immersing yourself in the experience.
Kingfisher Suite
The largest safari bungalow is the Kingfisher Suite, spanning 871 square feet while set on stilts above the floodplains. As with the other suites, three walls are made of mesh, and a king bed sits looking out at expansive views across the wilderness. In the Kingfisher, there is a generously sized lounge area that can either help to accommodate a family of five or be utilized by a couple for a romantic candlelit dinner. The bathroom has twin basins and showers, with one shower offering full floor-to-ceiling views across the surrounding paperbark forest.
