Vanua Levu INTRODUCTION
The second-largest island in Fiji, Vanua Levu is a great destination for the more adventurous traveler.
Surprisingly less tourist-oriented than the larger Viti Levu, it offers a taste of rural Fiji complete with rutted dirt roads and small cities with limited shops.
While Savusavu draws yachts seeking picturesque shores, the rest of the island is wild: think small villages, swaths of jungle and plenty of plantations. Given the natural condition of the island, outdoor activities abound.
The Wasali Nature Reserve is a great go-to for hikes through untouched rainforest, where you can come across a waterfall or two while taking in spectacular views.
Natewa Bay tempts sightings of Spinner and Bottle-Nose dolphins and soft coral lures snorkelers to the island’s surrounds.
For a dose of culture, visit the locals of Vuadomo Village or seek out Snake Temple near Labasa.
