Stewart Island INTRODUCTION
The third-largest island in New Zealand, Stewart Island can be reached by ferry from Bluff or plane from Invercargill.
Its traditional Maori name of Rakiura (‘the land of glowing skies’) hints of stunning sunrises and sunsets, and the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) can easily be considered an added bonus.
More than 85% of the island is National Park, a trait translated by its mere 28km of actual road and expansive 280km of walking tracks.
Take on the three-day Rakiura Track to get the best of the island, and let the Department of Conservation provide huts for your overnight stay. Along with its endless walking possibilities, Stewart Island is great for boat cruises, bird watching and wildlife sightseeing.
Out here, brown kiwi birds outnumber human inhabitants, and both blue and yellow-eyed penguins waddle near the water’s edge.
Venturing a little further off shore, fishermen will be thrilled by the fishing possibilities.
Blue cod, salmon, crayfish and paua swim beneath the surface, and make for a fine meal at the end of the day.
