Mount Cook National Park INTRODUCTION
Home to skyscraping peaks, expansive glaciers and plenty of permanent snow fields, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is a true alpine wonderland.
Nineteen of New Zealand’s 23 mountains over 3000m can be found here, alongside the longest glacier – the Tasman Glacier – at 27km long.
By day the area holds plenty of activities from hiking and climbing to glacier viewing and skiing, and come nightfall, the night sky turns into a dazzling display of stars. With all this to explore, it’s no wonder Mountaineers regard the area as the best climbing region in Australasia.
In fact, Sir Edmund Hillary himself used Mount Cook as a training ground before he conquered Everest.
Luckily, you don’t need to be quite so experienced to make the most of your surrounds – those less skilled in mountain sports will find pleasure in taking walks to alpine tarns, herb fields and spectacular alpine views.
Don't forget to look out for keas (mountain parrots) on the way!.
